What is Sociology?

A good example of how to approach the world: run at it with no fear. Start with a blank slate; look at it with a beginner's mind. She's eager and open for whatever the day brings.

Another example of childhood innocence. This little boy playing in the fountain is also utilizing Bernard McGrane's beginner's mind. He doesn't worry about the repercussions of getting wet, as would an adult; he just sees it as an opportunity for some fun.

Society is a group of people who shape their lives in aggregated and patterned ways that distinguish their group from other groups. This is a small society of chimps that is distinct from all others in the animal kingdom. Like our society, it is comprised of both males and females, young and old.

We can study society at different levels. One way to approach society is by using microsociology, or looking at smaller interactions to see how they affect the big picture. In this case, we can observe the face-to-face interactions between this young couple and compare them to other relationships within society.

This grocery store clerk holds the knowledge that he needs to get through his day on the job, but does he study the social world in order to gain scientific knowledge? That we do not know. For now we can assume he's just another everyday actor.

One way to experience a culture shock right in the midst of your familiar city is to attend a symphony orchestra for your first time. You will find yourself lost, unaware of how and when to react at the astonishing performance in front of you. It is definitely a different environment from the average Saturday night-life.
